Anti Aging Serums
A fairly new addition to the skincare department in many stores is various anti aging serums. A serum is different from a lotion or cream. The first thing you will notice is the thinner consistency. Many come in a small pump bottle or in a bottle with a dropper. With serums, you only need a small amount because a little goes a long way and they absorb readily into your skin. You don't need to replace your day or night cream with serum, in fact, you should use this type of product after cleansing and toning but before your moisturizer or wrinkle cream.
These lightweight products contain high powered ingredients like peptides, retinol, alpha hydroxy acids and vitamin C. These ingredients work to boost the skin cell turnover and increase radiance. According to consumer reviews and clinical trials, the data is quite promising when it comes to using serums. Like every skin care product, an anti aging serum does not work overnight, although you may notice an improvement in the tone and texture of your skin right away. Long term results come with long term use. The overall goal of using this type of product is to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, discoloration and sagging.
Vitamin C serums work to increase the natural production of collagen and improve the radiance of the skin. Make sure the vitamin C is microencapsulated which keeps the vitamin effective. This is why many of these serums are in amber glass bottles to protect them from light exposure which would weaken the antioxidant capability. If your skin is sensitive, a vitamin C serum may cause irritation of the skin. Try reducing the usage, and if that doesn't work consider trying a different formula. Start off with the mildest vitamin C serum so you'll know how your skin will react before trying something more powerful.
As previously mentioned, many serums also contain retinol and even natural ingredients like green tea. The inclusion of peptides is a new technology that increases the effectiveness of the serums even more. There are many companies who make skin serums, including Olay, Neutrogena, Obagi, ROC and Kinerase to name a handful. Even a trip to the drugstore can leave you confused as to which serum to buy. This is where researching consumer reviews can come in very helpful. There are sites like Epinions and Makeup Alley where you can read hundreds of reviews for various products.
For maximum results, follow a dedicated skincare routine twice daily. Make sure to choose products that are formulated for your skin type and targeted to your problem areas. This can be as easy as reading the back of the package. Price is often a factor for many consumers, and you will find that prices on anti aging serums vary depending on the manufacturer or if the store is having a sale on that particular item.
In the morning, start off with a cleanser made for your skin. Cetaphil is a very effective cleanser that is perfect for any skin type and is gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin types. There are cleansers for acne prone skin that contain ingredients like salicylic acid and those for dry skin that offer a rich moisturizing lather. Oil cleansers are popular these days, you can use plain jojoba oil on your skin then rinse off and it will remove dirt and makeup like magic.
After cleansing, try a toner. Rosewater and glycerin is natural and works for any type of skin. There are astringent toners for oily skin and moisturizing toners for dry skin. Do not rinse off the toner. Following the toner, use the serum. It will only take a few drops to cover your entire face, as the serum will expand and absorb easily. Wait a few minutes until the serum is completely absorbed before moving on to the next step.
If it's morning, follow up with a day cream or lotion and sunscreen if the product does not contain its own sunscreen. Sun damage is a leading cause of skin issues as well as skin cancer and should be worn regardless of the weather as UV rays can still get through on cloudy days and in the winter. Your nighttime routine will be slightly different that what you do in the morning.
At night, cleanse, tone and apply your serum as usual. Instead of using the same product you do during the day, switch to an intensive night cream. Also, sunscreen is unnecessary at bedtime. To supplement your regular routine, try an exfoliating scrub followed by a facial mask once a week. Anti aging serums make an excellent addition to your current skincare routine and can be used by teens and adults regardless of their skin issues as long as the right product is chosen.
