Are The Resveratrol Anti Aging Properties Fact Or Fiction?
Resveratrol anti aging properties have been extensively touted in the mainstream press, but as of now there is no definitive evidence to suggest that it can have a long term effect on the health or endurance of the human organism. Some tests have been carried out on rodents which suggest there is a possibility of a positive effect, but these have not been replicated with humans. Indeed, there has been concern expressed in some quarters that resveratrol may even have a negative effect on health. There are those who suspect it may be carcinogenic. Whatever the truth is, it is clear that a lot more testing will need to be dome before we are fully aware of it.
One fact, though, is abundantly clear. If resveratrol does have any positive effect on the health of the human body, it will only be able to do this if it is used as part of an overall strategic plan for improving longevity and skin quality. No substance is able to counter the damaging effects of many of the habits which are still common in Western society. The most obvious example of this is cigarette smoking, which has been the subject of many conclusive trials. Despite the overwhelming evidence of just how harmful it is, there are still many thousands of people who ignore the risks.
There are other risk factors to skin health which are far less well known. These include prolonged exposure to strong sunlight, and an excess of saturated fat in the diet. Trans fats, which are created when fats are transformed into saturated fat, are even more damaging. They increase the numbers of free radicals in the body. These free radicals are extremely damaging to the human skin, and they can even be a cause of cancer. Resveratrol has been touted as being able to counter these, but nothing has yet been scientifically proven.
The one critical factor with resveratrol anti aging programs is to make sure that all of the nutrients which the body needs on a regular basis are part of the diet, before you begin to think of using resveratrol or any other supplement. There are essential vitamins which have been proven to have an antioxidant effect, reducing the numbers of free radicals in the body. The most important of these are vitamins C and E, which have been the subject of a great many scientific tests. Vitamin C needs to be taken every may because it is water soluble and passes out of the body easily.
It has been suggested that resveratrol may be one of the factors in the apparent reduction in heart disease rates among people who regularly drink red wine. As is so often the case, there is no scientific evidence to support this, and many scientists seriously doubt the hypothesis. Red wine contains only very small amounts of resveratrol, and it is doubtful that these amounts could have a significant effect on the cardiovascular system. There is another substance in red wine called proanthocyanidin, which is believed to be the most likely contributing factor to reducing heart disease rates.
Tests are continuing constantly into the properties of resveratrol, but the vast majority of these tests are being carried out on laboratory animals, and are therefore of only limited value. There have recently been tests carried out on fish which have conclusively demonstrated a positive effect when high doses were used. The fish which were consistently fed resveratrol were significantly healthier when they reached adulthood, and they went on to have an extended life span. They did, however, show a slightly increased mortality rate when young.
The resveratrol anti aging tests which have been carried out on mice in recent years have had a completely different result. No matter what the dose of resveratrol given, nor the age of the mice when treatment started, the result was that there was no difference in the life expectancy of any of the groups treated with resveratrol, compared to the control group. These are extensive tests carried on large numbers of mice, and while they have no real relevance to the possibility of human lifespan being affected by resveratrol, they are certainly not supportive of its advocates.
So, where does this leave the resveratrol anti aging theory, and what should you do about it? The answers are probably that it leaves just as much doubt as before the experiments started, and that you should probably do nothing. If you drink red wine, there is no reason to discontinue, as whichever substance causes the increased protection against heart disease, there is no reason to doubt the statistics. If you want to use resveratrol as part of an anti aging campaign, make sure that you are using a comprehensive plan and not just relying on the effects of resveratrol anti aging.
